Parent's Help

Most parents are concerned with what will happen to their child(ren) when they finally finish school. Of course, our main goal is that they will be happy and successful in whatever they choose to do, but most of us also hope they go to college to accomplish this. This section has been developed...

Time Spent on Projects
Written by Derek Gaudet
Sunday, 09 December 2007

I was grading some projects completed by the 8th grade humanities classes, and read an interesting reflection by one of the students.

She commented that the students in her group had had a number of other projects due during the same time period, and they could have better managed their time by getting together at break to do some of the organization for this project; an interesting and wise observation.

I try to encourage the teachers to balance the work given to students so that the students do not have too many projects or tests due at the same time. I think it is important that students are able to have a healthy life after school. Many students participate in after school activities and have very long days before they get home. Too much homework means that they may not get any down time or time to just relax and be with their family.

This year we have tried to address this concern in different ways: we have moved the project planning calendar to outside the library so teachers and students alike can use it for reflection and organization, the coordinators are looking at the planner on a regular basis to ensure balance is kept, the timetable was created this year to allow all students to have 80 minute breaks for lunch time, and the library and computer lab are kept open during breaktime for the students' use.

The extra time at lunch...

The Science One World Essay

What follows is an explanation of the One World Essay as presented by the Science Department at ICS. Please click Read More to get the whole presentation.

The One World Essay is a component of the MYP Science Assessment which carries the same weight as all the other Criteria including Knowledge and Understanding which is assessed in tests/exam.

The value and importance of the One World Criterion in the study of Science was for years by MYP Science teachers with the eventual consensus of giving it the status that it presently has. We at ICS have come to accept it as a valuable part of the Science experience and all members of the Science Department are staunch advocates of the Criterion.

Parent Conference Recap
Written by Derek Gaudet
Monday, 19 November 2007
Thank you to all the parents who came to the parent conferences. The teachers have reported that they felt it was much better during the day. They were able to focus more on the conferences than in the evening after a full day at work. We also had many more parents attend the conferences than last year.
One comment from parents was the wish to see teachers even if their child was doing well in class. They did understanding though that time slots were given out first to parents of children with concerns. Many parents have expressed that they would like to have time just to meet with the teachers to 'put name to face'. I think that next year we will arrange an informal evening near the beginning of the year, where parents and teachers can meet and get to know each other (perhaps with tapas?).
If you have any comments or suggestions for next year, please let me know.
